How Architectural Metal Shop Drawings Are Developed
From architectural intent to fabrication drawings — the steps, decisions and approvals that keep a metal package buildable.
What the architect's drawing gives us — and what it can't
Architectural drawings define design intent: geometry, materials, finishes, relationships. They rarely define how metal meets structure, how panels split for fabrication, or where tolerance goes. Shop drawings translate intent into buildable components — and they are where most project risk is retired cheaply.
The development sequence
First, a feasibility review: geometry, spans, fixings and finishes checked against what fabrication can hold. Then setting-out — panel splits, joint lines, control lines against site dimensions. Then component drawings: every part with material, thickness, finish, and the references the workshop needs. Connections, adjustments and installation sequencing complete the set.
The decisions that get made here
Panel size versus transport limits. Where welds sit and how they are dressed. Which faces are critical for finish continuity. How the package absorbs site deviation. Grain direction across a wall. Batch grouping for PVD colour. These are shop drawing decisions, and they decide what arrives on site.
Approvals: one round, done properly
The approval round works when the drawing set shows the installer what they need: plans, sections, details at joints, and the interface to other trades. Comments come back once, consolidated, and the approved set becomes the production contract — including the finish map and sample references.
